EQUIPMENTGLOSSARY
The vocabulary of rosin equipment — presses, wash systems, and consumables — defined in plain terms.
Rosin
/ˈrɒzɪn/A mechanically separated output produced by applying controlled heat and pressure to source or collected material, without solvents.
Micron (µ)
/ˈmaɪkrɒn/Unit of measurement for filter bags. Lower numbers = finer filtration (e.g., 25µ for fine material).
Yield
/jiːld/The amount of rosin produced, expressed as a percentage of starting material weight.
Blowout
/ˈbləʊaʊt/When a rosin bag ruptures during pressing, contaminating the pressed output with source material.
Pre-Press
/priː prɛs/Compressing loose material into a uniform puck before pressing to improve consistency and reduce blowouts.
Platen
/ˈplætən/The heated, flat pressing surface of a rosin press that applies controlled temperature and pressure to the material.
Tonnage
The maximum pressing force a press can apply, measured in tons.
Hydraulic Press
A press that generates pressing force through pressurized fluid driving a ram.
Pneumatic Press
A press that generates pressing force from compressed shop air.
PID Control
A temperature-control method (Proportional–Integral–Derivative) that holds a setpoint precisely by continuously correcting for drift.
Dwell Time
How long heat and pressure are held on the material during a press cycle.
Dry Sift
A dry mechanical separation method that collects fine material through screens before pressing.
Ice-Water Wash
A solventless method that separates material by agitating it in ice water, then filtering through micron bags.
Agitation
Controlled movement of material in ice water to help separate it before filtering.
Sieve
A screen that separates particles by size during washing or collection.
Filter Bag
A micron-rated mesh bag that filters material during washing or pressing.
Parchment
Non-stick paper used to collect and store pressed output.
Freeze Dryer
Equipment (also called a lyophilizer) that removes moisture from washed material by sublimation under vacuum at sub-zero temperature.
Chiller
A refrigeration unit that cools and holds process water or coolant at a set temperature for washing and processing equipment.
Closed-Loop Cooling
A cooling system that continuously recirculates the same coolant through the equipment instead of drawing and discharging fresh water each cycle.
Glycol
A food-safe antifreeze fluid mixed with water as a coolant so a chiller can run below the freezing point of plain water without ice forming.
Heat Exchanger
A component that transfers heat between two fluids without mixing them, used in a chiller to pull warmth out of process water.
Ice-less
A cooling method that reaches and holds low process-water temperatures with a chiller instead of loose ice, avoiding ice sourcing, handling, and dilution.
