ICE WATERWASHING 101

Ice water washing is the cold, solventless way to separate resin glands from plant material: cold makes the glands brittle, gentle agitation knocks them free, and a ladder of micron filters collects them by size. Here is the process, step by step.

Why cold does the work

The resin glands you want to collect are oily and pliable at room temperature — squeeze them and they smear. Near freezing, they turn brittle and snap cleanly off the material that carries them. The whole process is built around that one physical fact: hold the water at 32–38°F and the glands let go intact; let it drift warm and you smear what you came to collect. This is why the cold chain matters more than any other variable in the wash.

The three stages

1. Agitation

Cold water and material are stirred so the brittle glands break free. The goal is enough turbulence to dislodge glands without shredding the plant material itself — torn plant tissue is the main contaminant in a wash. Hand-stirring works at small scale; a purpose-built agitator repeats the same gentle motion for a set time, batch after batch. Multiple short washes with fresh cold water pull more than one long aggressive one.

2. Micron filtration

The slurry drains through a stack of filter bags, coarse on top to fine on the bottom — typically a 220µm work bag down through the 25µm range. Each screen catches the particle size band that fits it, so the glands are graded as they are collected. Finer screens hold the highest-purity fraction; coarser screens hold larger, less refined material. 3. Drying

Wet output is perishable: moisture left in the collection invites mold and oxidation within days. Air drying works but takes most of a week in controlled humidity. A freeze dryer removes the moisture by sublimation under vacuum in 24–48 hours, preserving structure and aroma far better — it is the standard for any operation selling what it washes.

Fresh-frozen vs. dried material

Material frozen at harvest keeps its volatile aromatics locked in ice and washes to a lighter, more aromatic output — this is the "fresh frozen" approach behind most premium washed products. Dried material washes fine but yields a darker, less aromatic result. The trade is logistics: fresh-frozen demands freezer space and same-day processing, while dried material waits patiently.
